La Promesa del Leopardo - Bamileke
“Honra al leopardo, honra a vosotros mismos—pues él protege no solo el bosque, sino el corazón de los Bamileke.”

Long ago, in the highlands where mist curled around the green mountains of the Bamileke, there lived a mighty leopard called Fô Nta’a. Unlike other beasts, this leopard was said to be the spirit-guardian of the people, his golden eyes shining like fire under the moonlight.
The Bamileke elders taught that the leopard had made a promise to their ancestors:
“So long as you honor the earth and live in unity, I shall guard your villages and bless your harvests.”
The Pact of the Drums
Every year, during the festival of planting, the people gathered in the palace courtyard. Drummers pounded out rhythms that echoed through the hills, and dancers wearing leopard masks leapt and spun as though possessed by the spirit of Fô Nta’a. It was believed that with each beat of the drum, the bond between the people and their guardian grew stronger.
But one year, a proud hunter named Tangué defied the tradition. Boasting of his strength, he swore he would kill the leopard and claim its skin as a throne. He said, “Why should we bow to a beast when we are men of spear and fire?”
