Cerâmica Artesanal (Handmade Ceramics)

BrazilPortugueseSão Paulo

One of the most cherished traditional crafts in many Brazilian communities (especially in the Northeast and Minas Gerais) is handmade clay pottery and ceramics.

  • Significance: These pieces carry the spirit of our Indigenous, African, and Portuguese heritage. The techniques have been passed down through generations of artisans.
  • The colourful patterns often tell stories of daily life, nature, festivals, and spiritual beliefs.
  • Many families still use these pots for cooking feijoada or serving food during special occasions because they believe the clay gives a special flavour to the food.

In my community, learning to make these is a rite of passage — grandmothers teach grandchildren how to shape the clay, paint the designs, and fire them in wood kilns.

It represents creativity, resilience, and cultural pride.
