The Dala Horse (Dalahäst)
SwedenSwedishStockholm
One of the most beloved traditional crafts from my Swedish community is the Dala horse — a brightly painted wooden horse that originally comes from the province of Dalarna.

These horses began as simple wooden toys carved by men working in the forests during the long winters. Over time they developed into a beautiful folk-art tradition, painted in strong colours (most famously red) with distinctive floral patterns called kurbits.
Today the Dala horse is much more than a toy. It has become a national symbol of Sweden — representing craftsmanship, rural heritage, and a sense of home. You see them in houses all over the country, from simple kitchen shelves to fine design stores. Many families still pass them down through generations.
