Traditional Wedding Customs in a Marathi Community
Marathi weddings (Maharashtrian) are vibrant, meaningful, and blend rich traditions with simplicity and joy. They are usually held according to Hindu rituals and emphasize family involvement. Here are the key traditional customs:
1. Sagai (Engagement)

Families formally agree to the marriage.
The couple exchanges rings, and gifts (especially sweets and clothes) are exchanged between families.
It marks the official beginning of the wedding journey.
2. Haldi (Turmeric Ceremony)

A day or two before the wedding, turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom.
It is believed to purify and bring a natural glow. Family and friends participate, making it a fun and auspicious event.
3. Mehendi (Henna Night)

The bride’s hands and feet are decorated with intricate henna designs.
Women sing traditional songs (often teasing the groom’s side). It is a joyful pre-wedding celebration for the women.
4. Wedding Muhurta (Main Ceremony)

The core wedding rituals take place at an auspicious time (Muhurta) decided by a priest.
Key rituals include Kanyadaan (giving away of the bride by her parents), Mangalsutra tying, and Saptapadi (seven steps around the sacred fire).
5. Lagna (Wedding Rituals)

The bride and groom sit under a decorated Mandap.
The bride wears a traditional green or red Paithani or Nauvari saree with gold jewelry.
The groom wears a dhoti-kurta or sherwani with a turban (pheta).
6. Post-Wedding Customs

Grihapravesh: The bride is welcomed into the groom’s home.
Reception: A grand feast and celebration where friends and extended family congratulate the couple.
The couple seeks blessings from elders.
Marathi weddings are known for their elegance, emotional rituals, and delicious Maharashtrian food (like puran poli, modak, and festive feasts).
