Igala wedding customs
In Nigeria, the Igala wedding tradition is a deeply symbolic process that goes far beyond the ceremony itself. It is a journey that begins with family introductions and ends with the bride’s transition into her new home, emphasizing respect, unity, and community.
Omi-Kpe (The Seeking):
The journey begins with Omi-Kpe, where the groom’s elders visit the bride’s family. They speak in metaphors, such as asking to “pluck a flower,” showing wisdom, patience, and respect. The bride’s family then investigates the groom’s background to ensure he comes from a good home. The Bride Price & The List:
The bride price is symbolic and modest, reflecting the belief that a daughter is a gift, not something to be bought. However, the groom presents gifts like wrappers, kola nuts, and local gin to appreciate the family and community that raised the bride.Awa (Respect) – Groom’s Prostration:
On the wedding day, the groom and his friends prostrate fully before the bride’s elders. This act of humility shows deep respect, regardless of the groom’s social or financial status. The Blessing (T’ọwọ):
One of the most emotional moments is when the bride kneels before her parents to receive blessings. Through the laying on of hands, prayers are offered for her protection, happiness, and fruitfulness in her new home.Idu-Kpe (Bride’s Transition):
As the celebration continues, the bride is escorted to her new home by female relatives, carrying her belongings. This marks the beginning of her new life and responsibilities as a wife.
