Local Customs & Etiquette in Indonesia

Indonesians are known for being friendly, polite, and respectful. Here are the most important local customs and etiquette to know:

  1. Greetings: Always greet with a warm smile and “Selamat pagi/siang/sore/malam”. A light handshake is common (sometimes with both hands). Always greet the eldest person first.

  2. Respect for Elders & Hierarchy: Age and status are highly respected. Use polite language (Bahasa Indonesia yang baik) and avoid pointing with your index finger — use your thumb or full hand instead.

  3. Removing Shoes: Always take off your shoes before entering someone’s home, a mosque, or a temple. It’s a basic sign of respect and cleanliness.

  4. Using the Right Hand: Always give and receive things (money, gifts, food) with your right hand. The left hand is considered unclean.

  5. Modest Dress & Behaviour: Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Public displays of affection are generally avoided. Keep your voice calm and polite in public.

  6. Hospitality & “Jam Karet”: Indonesians are extremely hospitable — expect to be offered food and drink. “Jam karet” (rubber time) means being a little late is often accepted, especially in social settings.

These customs reflect core Indonesian values: respect, harmony (gotong royong), and politeness.
