PolandPolishMinsk

Polish weddings are not one day. They last two to three days. There is dancing, vodka, traditional food, and ancient rituals passed down for generations.

1. Oczepiny (The Unveiling Ceremony)

  • Most important Polish wedding ritual (around midnight)
  • Bride's veil is removed and replaced with a cap (czepiec)
  • Symbolizes transition from maiden to married woman
  • All unmarried women dance in a circle around the bride
  • Bride throws her veil to unmarried women (whoever catches will marry next)

2. Bread, Salt, and Wine (Chleb, Sól i Wino)

  • Parents greet newlyweds at reception entrance with bread, salt, and wine
  • Bread represents prosperity (never go hungry)
  • Salt represents ability to handle life's difficulties
  • Wine represents happiness and good health
  • Couple must eat bread dipped in salt, then drink wine

3. The Traditional Polish Dance (Polonez)

  • First dance of the wedding (opening the reception)
  • All guests join (not just bride and groom)
  • Danced in a long walking line (hand in hand)
  • Music: traditional Polonaise (slow, 3/4 beat, very dignified)
  • Every Polish person knows this dance

4. Money Dance (Taniec z Pieniędzmi)

  • Guests pay to dance with the bride
  • Money pinned to bride's veil or apron
  • Money collected for couple's future (honeymoon or new home)
  • Sometimes groom also dances for money
  • Very joyful and competitive

5. The Gate (Brama)

  • Guests block the road after church (before reception)
  • Often a ribbon or rope held across the road
  • Groom must "pay" (give vodka) to pass
  • Sometimes a musical challenge (sing song about couple)
  • Very common in villages

7. The Second Day (Poprawiny)

  • Wedding continues the next day (around noon)
  • Usually at the same venue or couple's home
  • Leftover food is eaten (or new simple food)
  • More vodka, more dancing, more games
  • Guests who could not come first day attend
  • Sometimes lasts until evening

8. Traditional Polish Wedding Food

  • "Rosół" (chicken soup) – first course
  • "Schabowy" (breaded pork cutlet) with potatoes and salad
  • "Bigos" (hunter's stew – sauerkraut, meat, sausage) – late night
  • "Żurek" (sour rye soup with sausage and egg) – traditional
  • Wedding cake is usually multi-tiered with cream and fruit

9. Church Wedding (Ślub Kościelny)

  • Most Polish weddings are Catholic (90%+ of country)
  • Ceremony lasts 45-60 minutes
  • Rings blessed by priest
  • Couple kneels before altar for blessing
  • Traditional Polish hymn "Barka" often sung

10. The Broom (Miotła)

  • Some regions have "broom jumping" ritual
  • Couple jumps over broom together (symbol of sweeping away old life)
  • Or broom is laid across doorway (must step over)
  • Represents new beginning
  • Less common than in past but still seen in villages

11. Wedding Music (Kapela)

  • Traditional band plays all night (rarely recorded music)
  • Instruments: violin, accordion, bass, drums (sometimes clarinet)
  • Specific wedding dances: Polonez, Oberek (fast turning dance), Kujawiak (slower dance)
  • Band must play until the last guest leaves (sometimes 5-6 AM)
  • Band's tips are for requests (pinned on instruments)
