Traditional Wedding Customs in the United Kingdom
British weddings blend centuries-old traditions with modern touches. Here are the most important classic customs:
1. The Proposal & Engagement

The groom traditionally proposes on one knee with a diamond ring. The couple announces the engagement, often with a formal notice in newspapers (especially in higher society). An engagement party may follow.
2. Something Old, New, Borrowed, Blue

The bride wears:
- Something old (family heirloom for continuity)
- Something new (optimism for the future)
- Something borrowed (from a happily married friend for luck)
- Something blue (fidelity and purity)
3. The Church Ceremony

Most traditional weddings are held in a church. The bride arrives late (fashionably) with her father. The groom waits at the altar. Key moments include the giving away of the bride, hymns, Bible readings, and the exchange of vows and rings.
4. Confetti, Rice & Bouquet Toss

After the ceremony, guests throw confetti, rice, or flower petals. The bride tosses her bouquet to single women (the catcher is said to be next to marry).
5. Wedding Reception & Speeches

A formal sit-down meal (wedding breakfast) follows. The best man, father of the bride, and groom give humorous speeches. The cake is cut, and the first dance as husband and wife usually opens the evening party.
6. Wedding Cake & Toasts

A multi-tiered fruit cake (often with royal icing) is central. Toasts with champagne or sparkling wine celebrate the couple.
7. Honeymoon
Traditionally, the couple leaves for a romantic honeymoon immediately after the reception or the next day.
