A British Columbia Wedding

CanadaEnglishBritish Columbia

A British Columbia wedding is usually a day for family and friends. The couple signs papers, has a short ceremony, then eats and dances. Many are outdoors when the weather is good.

Engagement

  • The couple decide to marry and tell family and close friends first.
  • A ring is common but not required. Some skip it.
  • An engagement party is optional. It is often a dinner or a backyard barbecue.
  • The date is set months ahead. Halls and outdoor sites book early in summer.
  • Friends and family start to help with plans.

The ceremony

  • It can be in a church, a hall, a park, or by the water.
  • A legal officiant or a religious one leads it.
  • The couple and two witnesses sign the register. That makes the marriage legal.
  • Vows can be short or written by the couple.
  • Music is played. Guests stand when the couple enter.

The wedding party

  • There is usually a best man, a maid of honour, and a few attendants.
  • Children may carry rings or flowers.
  • Dress is formal for the party. Guests wear smart clothes.
  • The party walks in and stands near the couple.
  • Photos are taken before or after the ceremony.

The reception

  • Guests eat a meal. It can be a sit-down dinner or a buffet.
  • Speeches come from the best man, the parents, and sometimes the couple.
  • A first dance follows. Then everyone dances.
  • The cake is cut and shared.
  • People stay until late. Some leave earlier with children.

The next day

  • Close family and the wedding party may meet for brunch.
  • Gifts are opened if they have not been already.
  • The couple often leave for a short trip.
  • Thank-you notes go out later.
  • The day is quieter. People rest after the party.
