Kerala Mural Painting

IndiaMalayalamMumbai (formerly Bombay)

One of the most beautiful and significant traditional art forms in our Malayali community is Kerala Mural Painting (also known as Chithram or temple murals).

What it is

Kerala murals are vibrant, intricate paintings done on the walls of temples, palaces, and traditional homes. They typically depict scenes from Hindu mythology — especially stories of Lord Vishnu (as Krishna), Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, and other deities — along with episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana.

The style is unique:

  • Rich, earthy colors (red, yellow, green, blue, and gold)

  • Bold black outlines

  • Highly expressive faces and detailed costumes

  • A perfect balance of spirituality and artistic beauty

Significance

These murals are not just decoration — they are considered sacred. They were traditionally painted by skilled artisans using natural pigments. The art form teaches moral and spiritual values, preserves our ancient stories, and connects us to our cultural and religious roots.

Even today, you can see stunning examples in temples like the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Guruvayur Temple, and many old palaces. Modern artists continue this tradition on canvas, wooden panels, and even in contemporary homes.

Kerala mural painting is a living heritage that reflects our deep connection to devotion, storytelling, and artistic excellence.
