Local Customs & Etiquette in Finland

FinlandFinnishHelsinki

Finns value honesty, punctuality, personal space, and quiet respect. Here are the most important customs and etiquette rules:

1. Punctuality

Being on time is considered a sign of respect. Arriving even a few minutes late is noticed. For social gatherings, arrive exactly at the agreed time.

2. Personal Space & Silence

Finns appreciate a comfortable distance and quiet. Long silences in conversation are normal and not awkward. Small talk is less common than in many other cultures.

3. Greetings

A firm handshake with eye contact is the standard greeting for both men and women. Close friends and family may hug, but kissing on the cheek is rare.

4. Shoes Off Indoors

Always remove your shoes when entering someone’s home. Hosts often provide indoor slippers.

5. Sauna Etiquette

The sauna is a sacred and social space. Usually people go nude (or with a towel), sit quietly, and avoid loud talking. Always shower before entering.

6. Honesty & Directness

Finns speak plainly and value honesty. Exaggeration or overly polite flattery can feel insincere. Saying “no” directly is perfectly acceptable.
