Traditional recipe
Igala cuisine from Nigeria is rich, earthy, and deeply rooted in local ingredients like yam, fish, and forest spices. One of the most loved dishes is Okoho soup, a unique traditional soup known for its distinctive texture and cultural importance.
Common traditional dishes:
Igala people enjoy meals like Okoho soup, Egusi soup, Ogbono soup, Onugbo (bitterleaf) soup, and staples like pounded yam and cassava-based swallows. These dishes reflect a strong connection to farming and river life.My favorite dish – Okoho soup:
Okoho soup is made from the stem of the Okoho plant, giving it a slightly stretchy texture. It is a delicacy in Igala land and is often served during special occasions.Ingredients:
Okoho stick (processed into powder or paste)
Palm oil
Dried fish or fresh fish
Meat (optional)
Ground pepper
Seasoning cubes and salt
Water
reparation method:
Boil fish and/or meat with seasoning and pepper
Add palm oil and allow it to cook
Gradually add the Okoho paste while stirring continuously
Let the soup thicken and develop its signature texture
Adjust seasoning and simmer briefly before serving
Why I love it & how I’ll pass it on:
I love Okoho soup because it represents home, tradition, and identity. Its unique taste and texture make it unforgettable. I will pass it on by teaching younger generations how to prepare it and sharing meals together during family gatherings.
