Local Customs & Etiquette in Malayali Communities
Here are some important customs and etiquette we follow in Kerala:
1. Greetings & Respect for Elders

Always greet elders first with “Namaskaram” (with folded hands) or “Namaste”.
Touch the feet of elders (especially grandparents) as a sign of respect.
Address elders respectfully as “Chettan/Chechi” (elder brother/sister), “Amma/Appa”, or “Paati/Thatha”.
2. Hospitality (Athithi Devo Bhava)

Guests are treated like God. We always offer water, tea, or a meal when someone visits.
It is polite to insist a few times when offering food or drinks — saying “no” once is common, but we encourage guests to accept.
3. Dining Etiquette

Traditionally, we eat with our right hand on a banana leaf.
Never waste food — it is considered disrespectful.
Wash hands before and after meals. It is polite to sit on the floor or at the table with the family.
4. Temple & Religious Places

Always remove shoes and socks before entering temples or mosques.
Dress modestly — women usually wear sarees or salwar kameez, men wear dhoti or traditional shirts.
Maintain silence and follow the rituals with devotion.
5. Home & Social Etiquette

Remove footwear before entering someone’s home.
It is common to offer coconut water, tender coconut, or fresh fruits to guests.
Women cover their heads with the pallu of the saree or dupatta in temples or in front of elders when showing respect.
6. General Politeness

Speak softly and avoid arguing loudly in public.
Help elders and show patience — our culture highly values humility and kindness.
During festivals or special occasions, sharing sweets or food with neighbors is very common.
These customs reflect our values of respect, humility, hospitality, and community harmony.
