Most Common Bengali Indian Meals
Bengali cuisine is famous for its delicate flavours, mustard oil, fish, and love for rice and sweets. Here are 6 of the most common everyday meals in our Bengali community:
Maachh Bhaat (Fish Curry with Rice): The ultimate Bengali staple. Freshwater fish (like hilsa/ilish, rohu, or katla) cooked in light mustard or tomato-based gravy, served with steamed rice.

Aloo Posto: Potatoes cooked in a creamy poppy-seed (posto) paste with green chillies and mustard oil. A simple, comforting vegetarian favourite.

Shukto: A slightly bitter mixed vegetable stew with bitter gourd, banana, eggplant, and milk or poppy seeds. Traditionally eaten at the start of a meal to cleanse the palate.

Dal Bhaat with Bhaja: Lentil soup (usually moong or musur dal) with steamed rice and crispy fried vegetables or fish fritters (bhaja). Everyday comfort food.

Chingri Malai Curry: Prawns cooked in a rich, creamy coconut milk gravy with mild spices. A festive yet very popular dish.

Luchi-Aloor Dom: Soft, puffed deep-fried bread (luchi) served with spicy potato curry (aloor dom). A classic breakfast or Sunday special.

These dishes reflect the Bengali love for rice, fish, mustard, and balance of flavours.
