Tamil cuisine is simple, flavorful, and deeply rooted in rice, lentils, vegetables, and aromatic spices. Meals are often served on banana leaves and follow a traditional sequence. Here are the everyday staples:

1. Idli-Sambar Breakfast

Soft steamed rice-lentil cakes (idli) with tangy sambar and coconut chutney.
Often eaten with filter coffee — the classic Tamil morning meal.

2. Dosa or Upma

Crispy dosa (plain or masala) or savory semolina upma.
Quick, wholesome, and popular for breakfast or light dinner.

3. Full Tamil Lunch (Soru)

Steamed rice served with:

  • Sambar (lentil-vegetable stew)

  • Rasam (spicy tamarind-pepper soup)

  • Poriyal (stir-fried vegetables)

  • Kootu (lentil-vegetable curry)

  • Appalam (papad) and pickles

4. Curd Rice (Thayir Sadam)

Rice mixed with yogurt, tempered with mustard, curry leaves, and green chilies.
Usually the last course of a meal — cooling and comforting.

5. Pongal

Festive rice cooked with moong dal and ghee (ven pongal — savory, or sweet pongal with jaggery).
Especially common during the Pongal harvest festival but eaten year-round.

6. Chapati with Kurma or Biryani

Wheat flatbread with vegetable kurma or fragrant vegetable/chicken biryani on special days.

Tamil meals emphasize balance (six tastes), seasonal produce, and fermentation for health. Vegetarian food is predominant in traditional homes, with generous use of coconut, tamarind, and curry leaves.
