Local customs & etiquette
Here’s a guide to important local customs and etiquette to help you feel comfortable and respectful when visiting or interacting with Emiratis:
General Etiquette

Greetings: Use “As-salaamu alaykum” (Peace be upon you). Reply with “Wa alaykum as-salaam”. Shake hands with the same gender; for the opposite gender, a nod or smile is common unless they offer their hand.
Right Hand: Always use your right hand for eating, handing things, or greeting.
Modest Dress: Dress conservatively, especially in public places. Shoulders and knees should be covered. Women often wear abayas in more traditional settings.
Hospitality: Emiratis are very hospitable. If invited to a home, accept Arabic coffee (gahwa) and dates. It is polite to take at least a small sip.

Important Customs

Remove Shoes: When entering a majlis (sitting area) or someone’s home, remove your shoes.
Respect for Elders: Always greet elders first and show them extra respect.
Photography: Ask permission before taking photos of people, especially women.
Ramadan Etiquette: Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in public during daylight hours out of respect for those fasting.
Public Behaviour: Avoid public displays of affection (even between married couples). Keep your voice moderate.

In Social & Business Settings
Meetings: Be patient — relationships are important before business.
Gender Interactions: Respect personal space, especially between men and women who are not family.
Left Hand: Avoid using the left hand for eating or passing items (considered unclean).
