Traditional Finnish Wedding Customs
Finnish weddings are a beautiful blend of tradition, nature, simplicity, and heartfelt celebration. Here are 6 key traditional wedding customs:
- Engagement (Kihlaus): The groom traditionally asks the bride’s father for permission. A small engagement party is often held with close family, where rings are exchanged.

2. Banns (Avioesteiden kuuluttaminen): The church announces the upcoming marriage for three consecutive Sundays. This public declaration is an old Lutheran tradition.

3. Polttarit (Stag & Hen Parties): Fun pre-wedding parties for the bride and groom separately. These often include silly challenges, saunas, and outdoor activities.

4. Church Wedding Ceremony: Most Finnish weddings are held in beautiful wooden churches or outdoors in nature. The bride traditionally wears white, and the couple walks out under an arch of swords or flowers.

5. Bride’s Crown & Shoe Game: The bride may wear a traditional crown. During the reception, guests hide the groom’s shoes and the bride must find them, or there are playful games where the couple answers questions about each other.

6. Reception & Midnight Snack: A long, joyful dinner with speeches, songs, and dancing. Late at night, a traditional “yösyöttö” (midnight snack) like sausages or sandwiches is served.

Finnish weddings emphasize nature, equality, warmth, and good humour.
