Traditional Wedding Customs in Malayali (Kerala) Culture

IndiaMalayalamMumbai (formerly Bombay)

Malayali weddings (especially Hindu) are elegant, meaningful, and blend Vedic traditions with local customs. They are generally simpler and shorter than many North Indian weddings. Here are the key traditional customs:

1. Horoscope Matching (Jathakam)

Before anything, families match the bride and groom’s horoscopes for compatibility (porutham). This is very important in traditional Malayali families.

2. Engagement / Nischayam (Betrothal)

A formal engagement ceremony where families exchange gifts and fix the wedding date. It is usually a small gathering with sweets and blessings.

3. Mehendi (Marapp) & Sangeet

The bride’s hands and feet are decorated with henna (mehendi). There may be light music and family gatherings, though it is usually low-key compared to North Indian functions.

4. Wedding Day – Muhurtham

The core ritual happens at an auspicious time (muhurtham). The groom ties the Thali (mangalsutra) around the bride’s neck while mantras are chanted. The couple exchanges garlands (mala) and performs rituals like pouring rice or holding hands.

5. Kanyadanam & Sapthapadi

The bride’s father gives her away (Kanyadanam). The couple takes seven steps together (Sapthapadi) around the sacred fire, symbolizing their lifelong journey.

6. Post-Wedding Customs

  • Grihapravesam — The bride enters the groom’s house for the first time.

  • A traditional feast (sadya) on banana leaves is served.

  • The couple often visits temples the next day. In some communities, there is a reception or valedictory function.

Malayali weddings emphasize simplicity, family involvement, and auspicious timing. Modern weddings may include more celebrations, but the core rituals remain rooted in tradition.
