Kantha Embroidery

IndiaBengaliMumbai (formerly Bombay)

One of the most beautiful and meaningful traditional crafts from our Bengali community is Kantha (or Kantha stitch embroidery).

Significance:

  • Kantha is a centuries-old folk embroidery tradition, originally created by rural Bengali women using old, worn-out sarees and dhotis.

  • Layers of old cloth are stitched together with simple running stitches to make quilts, throws, stoles, and garments.

  • The motifs often tell stories — trees of life, animals, gods and goddesses, daily village life, lotus flowers, and geometric patterns.

  • It symbolizes sustainability, thrift, creativity, and the quiet artistic expression of Bengali women.

  • What was once a practical way to recycle cloth has become a celebrated art form and a symbol of Bengali cultural identity. Today, fine Kantha work is highly valued and worn with pride.
