Important Bengali Festivals
Bengalis are known for celebrating festivals with great enthusiasm, culture, and food. Here are 6 of the most important festivals in our community:
Durga Puja: Celebration of Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura (good over evil). The biggest and most beloved festival — grand pandals, idols, dhaak, cultural programmes, and emotional immersion.

Kali Puja / Diwali: Worship of Goddess Kali and the festival of lights. Homes are lit with diyas, fireworks, and prayers for protection and prosperity.

Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year): The first day of the Bengali calendar, marking new beginnings. People wear new clothes, draw alpona, exchange greetings, and enjoy special meals.

Saraswati Puja: Worship of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and arts. Especially important for students — books are kept for blessings, and yellow is worn.

Rath Yatra: The grand chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra. A major Vaishnava festival celebrated with huge decorated chariots pulled by devotees.

Holi: The festival of colours and spring, celebrating love and the victory of good. Bengalis celebrate with abir (coloured powder), water, music, and sweets like gujiya and malpua.

These festivals bring our community together through devotion, art, music, food, and shared joy.
