Local customs & etiquette in Egypt

  • Greetings: Always start with “Salam alaikum” (Peace be upon you). Men shake hands with men. Women often greet each other with two kisses on the cheeks. Greet elders first and show them extra respect.

  • Visiting Homes: Remove your shoes at the door. Expect warm hospitality — your host will offer tea, coffee, or a meal. Accept at least a little even if you’re not very hungry.

  • Dress Code: Dress modestly, especially at religious sites. Women should cover shoulders and knees. Avoid very revealing clothes in public places.

  • Right Hand Rule: Always use your right hand for eating, passing objects, greeting, or pointing. The left hand is traditionally considered less clean.

  • Respect for Family & Elders: Family is central. Always show respect and kindness to older people. Listen patiently when they speak.

  • During Ramadan: Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public out of respect for those fasting.

  • Markets & Bargaining: Friendly bargaining is normal and expected in places like Khan El Khalili. It’s part of the experience.

  • Photography: Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially women or inside private homes.

  • General Attitude: Egyptians value warmth, generosity, and patience. A smile and polite attitude will make you feel very welcome.

These customs reflect Egypt’s deep values of respect, hospitality, and community.
