Traditional Weddings in Colombia

Colombian weddings are known for being vibrant, family-centered, joyful, and full of symbolism. They often blend Catholic traditions with local cultural elements.

1. Pedida de Mano (Asking for the Bride’s Hand)

  • The groom formally asks the bride’s father (or both parents) for permission to marry.

  • This is usually done during a family dinner or gathering.

  • It shows respect for family and is still very important in traditional families.

2. Serenata (Serenade)

  • A romantic tradition where the groom and his friends surprise the bride at her home with musicians (often playing vallenato or boleros).

  • They sing love songs under her window or balcony.

3. Religious Ceremony (Catholic Influence)

  • Most traditional weddings are held in a church.

  • Key rituals include:

    • Las Arras (13 gold or silver coins): The groom gives the bride 13 coins blessed by the priest. They symbolize Jesus and the 12 apostles, prosperity, and the couple’s commitment to share material goods.

    • Unity Candle: The couple lights a central candle together, symbolizing their union.

4. Hora Loca (“Crazy Hour”)

  • A highlight of the reception, usually around midnight.

  • Guests wear fun accessories (hats, masks, inflatable toys, etc.), and the party becomes even more energetic with lively music and dancing.

5. Reception & Celebration

  • Colombian weddings are famous for lasting all night.

  • Lots of dancing (salsa, vallenato, cumbia, merengue), live music, and abundant food (rice, plantains, meats, ajiaco, etc.).

  • The bride and groom often leave in a decorated car while guests continue celebrating.

Other Common Traditions

  • Coin in the Shoe: Some brides place a gold coin in their shoe for good luck and prosperity.

  • Family Involvement: Weddings are big family affairs with godparents (padrinos) playing important roles.

  • Flowers & Colors: Bright colors and lots of flowers (especially orchids) are very common.

Colombian weddings emphasize family unity, joy, faith, and celebration.
