Russian Customs & Etiquette for Tourists
Russians value warmth, respect, and sincerity. Learning these simple rules will help you feel welcome and show good manners during your visit.
Greetings & Politeness: Firm handshake with eye contact for men; light cheek kiss (3 times) for close friends/women. Always say “Zdravstvuyte” (formal hello) and smile. Use “Vy” (formal “you”) with elders and strangers.

Shoes Off Indoors: Always remove shoes when entering a Russian home. Hosts usually provide tapochki (slippers). This keeps homes clean, especially during snowy winters.
Table Manners & Toasts: Accept food and drink when offered (refusing can offend). “Gorko!” at weddings means kiss! Stand for important toasts. Never pour your own drink if others are present — pour for others first.

Gift Giving: Bring flowers (odd number only — even numbers are for funerals), sweets, or wine when visiting. Gifts are opened immediately. Avoid yellow flowers or chrysanthemums.

Hospitality & Respect: Accept second helpings and tea — saying “no” too strongly may seem rude. Respect elders (babushkas and dedushkas), offer your seat on transport, and be patient in queues. Loud talking in public is frowned upon.

Following these customs shows respect and opens doors to genuine Russian warmth and unforgettable hospitality!
