Special Occasions in a Typical Marathi Family

IndiaMarathiMumbai (formerly Bombay)

In Marathi families, celebrations are filled with tradition, togetherness, delicious food, and vibrant rituals. Here’s how we typically mark important moments:

1. Gudi Padwa (Marathi New Year)

  • We raise the Gudi (auspicious flag) early morning. Homes are decorated with rangoli and mango leaf torans.
  • Special festive meal with Puran Poli, shrikhand, and aamras. Family gathers, new clothes are worn, and we visit temples.

2. Ganesh Chaturthi

  • The most beloved festival — Lord Ganesha is welcomed home for 10 days.
  • We install beautifully decorated Ganesh idols, perform daily aarti, and offer modak. On Anant Chaturdashi, we immerse the idol with grand processions and music.

3. Diwali (Laxmi Poojan)

  • Homes are cleaned and lit with diyas and fairy lights. We draw large rangoli at entrances.
  • Laxmi-Poovan is performed for prosperity. Family feasts include faral (snacks like chakli, laddoo) and fireworks light up the night.

4. Weddings

  • Multi-day events with Haldi, Mehendi, and the main Muhurta ceremony under a mandap.
  • Traditional Maharashtrian green/red sarees for the bride and pheta (turban) for the groom. Lots of music, dancing, and a grand feast.

5. Birthdays & Anniversaries

  • Simple yet warm — family puja in the morning, followed by a home-cooked feast.
  • We often visit a temple and distribute sweets to neighbours. Elders give blessings (ashirwad).

6. Makar Sankranti (Kite Festival)

  • We fly colorful kites and enjoy til laddoos and sesame sweets.
  • It marks the end of winter and the beginning of longer days — a time for joy and community kite-flying competitions.

No matter the occasion, the heart of every celebration is family unity, sharing food, and expressing gratitude. Hospitality is very important — guests are always welcomed with warmth and a cup of tea or a plate of snacks.
