The Attah (meaning “Father”) is the supreme traditional ruler of the Igala Kingdom, centered in Idah, Kogi State in Nigeria. He is not just a political leader but a semi-divine figure, deeply respected as both a cultural and spiritual authority.

  • The "Father" of the Nation:
As the name implies, he is seen as the spiritual and physical father of all Igala people, providing unity, guidance, and a shared sense of identity.

  • Divine kingship:
Traditionally, the Attah is regarded as a “living ancestor,” serving as the mediator between the physical world and the ancestral spirit realm.

  • Custodian of culture:
He is the ultimate guardian of Igala traditions, laws, and sacred artifacts, including important cultural symbols like the Ejubejuailo mask.

  • Historical sovereignty:
The Attah once ruled a powerful empire at the Niger-Benue confluence, commanding vast territories and a strong naval presence along the River Niger.

  • Political authority:
Even today, the Attah remains highly influential in traditional governance, serving as the Chairman of the Igala Traditional Council and playing a key role in community leadership.
