In Jordanian households, food is a big part of daily life and family gatherings. Here are the most common and beloved meals:

  1. Mansaf: Jordan’s national dish. Lamb cooked in fermented yogurt sauce (jameed) served over rice with toasted almonds and parsley. It is usually eaten with the right hand and shared from a large platter.

  2. Musakhan: Roasted chicken with onions, sumac, and pine nuts on taboon bread. Very popular, especially in the north.

  3. Maqluba: “Upside-down” rice dish with eggplant, cauliflower, chicken or lamb, and spices. It is flipped when served.

  4. Falafel & Hummus: Crispy falafel with creamy hummus, fresh vegetables, and pickles in pita bread. A daily staple and favourite street food.

  5. Shawarma: Thin slices of marinated meat (chicken or lamb) roasted on a vertical spit, served in flatbread with garlic sauce and salad.

  6. Stuffed Vegetables (Mahshi): Zucchini, eggplant, and grape leaves filled with rice and meat or vegetarian filling.

  7. Kunafa: Sweet dessert made of crispy shredded pastry, cheese, and sugar syrup. Often served at celebrations.

  8. Mansaf-style stews & rice dishes: Jordanians love rice with different stews, yogurt, and fresh salads (like fattoush or tabbouleh).

Meals are usually shared family-style, and hospitality means always offering food to guests. Jordanian food is rich in flavour, using olive oil, spices, yogurt, and fresh herbs.
