Most Common Meals in Our Punjabi Community 🍛
Sat Sri Akaal! In our Punjabi families, food is all about rich flavours, generous ghee/butter, and hearty portions that bring everyone together. Here are the 6 most common and beloved meals we eat regularly:
1. Sarson da Saag & Makki di Roti
Mustard greens slow-cooked with spices, paired with hot cornmeal flatbread, a dollop of white butter, and jaggery. A classic winter comfort meal.
2. Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhani)
Tender chicken in a creamy tomato-butter gravy with fragrant spices. Served with naan, roti, or jeera rice — a festive and everyday favourite.
3. Dal Makhani
Slow-simmered black lentils and kidney beans in a rich, buttery cream gravy. Usually enjoyed with naan or rice. It’s the ultimate comfort dish.
4. Chole Bhature
Spicy chickpea curry with fluffy, deep-fried bhature bread. Popular for weekend breakfasts or brunch.
5. Rajma Chawal
Red kidney beans in a thick spicy gravy served over steamed rice. Simple, wholesome, and a weekly staple in most homes.
6. Paneer Butter Masala or Kadhai Paneer
Cottage cheese cubes in a creamy tomato gravy or stir-fried with peppers and spices. The go-to vegetarian option for family dinners and guests.
We always pair meals with fresh lassi, onion salad, green chutney, pickle, and papad. Food is cooked with love, served hot, and shared generously — "jeetna khaana, ohi pyar" (the more you share, the more love).
