Sombrero Vueltiao

ColombiaSpanishMedellín

The Sombrero Vueltiao is one of the most important symbols of Colombian identity, especially from the Caribbean coast (particularly in the departments of Córdoba and Sucre).

It is hand-woven by skilled artisans using fibers from the caña flecha plant.

  • The name "Vueltiao" comes from the way the brim is turned up ("vuelta").
  • The black and white patterns represent the cultural fusion of Indigenous Zenú people, African, and Spanish heritage.
  • In 2000, the Colombian Congress declared it the National Symbol of Colombia, and it is worn by farmers, musicians, dancers, and during festivals like the Carnaval de Barranquilla.
  • Wearing it represents pride, tradition, hard work, and connection to the land.

It is so culturally significant that former presidents and famous musicians (like Shakira or vallenato artists) often wear it as a mark of national pride.

This hat is not just a headwear — it is a living piece of Colombian history and craftsmanship.
