Heart of Bamenda - Where Tradition Meets Modernity
Location & Geography
Located in the North West Region (Mezam Division) of Cameroon, within the heart of Bamenda city (Bamenda II subdivision). The climate is cool and humid, with clear wet (March-October) and dry (November-February) seasons.
History & Origins
The Mankon people trace their ancestry to the Tikar migration, fleeing northern Cameroon centuries ago. They settled progressively through Ndop and the Bamileke plateau, finally establishing at Fozan, where the palace stands today.
Etymology: The name "Mankon" combines ma (mother) + nkon (wave), symbolizing waves of migration that brought them to the current land.
Governance & Traditional Authority
Headed by the Fon of Mankon, both political and spiritual leader. Current Fon is HRH Fon Fru Asaah Angwafo IV, enthroned in 2022 after the long reign of Fon Angwafo III (1959-2022).
