Bengali Proverbs & Idioms
Bengalis love using witty, wise, and often humorous proverbs (প্রবাদ / proverbs) and idioms in everyday conversation. Here are 5 common ones from our native language and what they mean:
- “এক হাতে তালি বাজে না” (Ek haate tali baje na): You can’t clap with one hand. → It takes two people to quarrel… or to make something work. Cooperation (or conflict) needs both sides.

2. “নাচতে না জানলে উঠানের দোষ” (Nachte na janle uthaner dosh): If you don’t know how to dance, you blame the courtyard. → People who lack skill often blame external factors instead of themselves.

3. “যত গর্জে তত বর্ষে না” (Joto gorje toto borshe na): It doesn’t rain as much as it thunders. → People who talk a lot or make big threats usually don’t deliver much action.

4. “অতি ভক্তি চোরের লক্ষণ” (Ati bhakti chorer lokkhon): Excessive devotion is the sign of a thief. → When someone is overly flattering or overly religious, they might have a hidden motive.

5. “বাঘে-ছাগলে এক ঘাটে জল খায় (Baghe-chagole ek ghate jol khay): The tiger and the goat drink water from the same ghat. → Used sarcastically when two completely opposite people or things appear to be getting along (usually unbelievable).

These proverbs are full of humour, life lessons, and sharp observation — just like Bengali adda!”
