How Special Occasions are Celebrated in UAE
United Arab EmiratesArabicDubai
In Emirati culture, celebrations are all about family, generosity, hospitality, and faith. Here’s how we typically mark special occasions:
Common Ways We Celebrate
- Big Family Gatherings: Whether it’s Eid, a wedding, a baby’s birth (Aqiqah), or even a graduation, the whole extended family comes together. Elders are always seated first and shown great respect.
Traditional Food Feasts: The table is always overflowing. Machboos, harees, mandi, luqaimat, and dates are staples. Arabic coffee (gahwa) and dates are offered to every guest as a symbol of welcome.

- Traditional Attire: Everyone dresses up in their finest kanduras, ghutras, abayas, and beautiful embroidered dresses.

- Henna & Perfume: For women’s celebrations (weddings, Eid, baby showers), intricate henna is applied, and bukhoor (incense) and oud perfume are used generously.

- Music & Traditional Dance: Women often perform traditional dances. Men may do the Yowla (stick dance) at bigger events.
- Gifts & Generosity: Giving gifts (especially gold for brides or money for children during Eid) is very important. Charity (sadaqah) is also common on special days.
- Fireworks & Lights: Many celebrations, especially weddings and National Day, end with beautiful fireworks.
A Typical Family Celebration
We start with prayer or Quran recitation, enjoy a huge shared meal, spend time catching up with stories and laughter, and end the night with tea, sweets, and sometimes a desert trip or beach gathering.
