Special Occasion in Cypriot Families
Special occasions centre on Orthodox faith, family gatherings, and shared food and music. Name days and religious feasts matter more than birthdays.
Holy Saturday night: The whole community gathers outside the church in darkness. At midnight the priest brings out the Holy Light and shouts “Christos Anesti!” Candles light up one by one until the village glows. People kiss and reply “Alithos Anesti!” We carry the light home to bless the house.

First meal: avgolemono soup and red eggs (we crack them for good luck).
Easter Sunday: Big family lunch with souvla, flaounes, salads and more red eggs. Music, children playing, celebration lasting all afternoon.

Christmas (25 Dec): Family meal with roast meat, kourabiedes and melomakarona. Ends with Epiphany (6 Jan) and the blessing of the waters.

Name days: Friends and family visit with gifts; the person offers coffee and sweets. Often bigger than birthdays.

Weddings: Church crowning ceremony followed by a large outdoor party with music, dancing and food.

Baptisms: Baby immersed in the font; godparent gives a gold cross and stays important for life.

15 August (Assumption): Village fairs with church processions, music and dancing. Many return home for it.
