Why Do Thousands of People Throw Tomatoes in Spain?

SpainSpanishMadrid

Every year, in the small town of Buñol, something unbelievable happens — the streets turn completely red.

This is the story of La Tomatina, one of Spain’s most famous festivals.

It all began in 1945, during a local parade. A group of young people started a small fight in the street. In the chaos, someone grabbed tomatoes from a nearby stall and threw them.

What started as a joke quickly turned into a full tomato fight.

The next year, people came back on purpose — bringing their own tomatoes.

Even though authorities tried to stop it at first, the tradition became so popular that it was officially recognized as a festival.

What Happens Today

Now, thousands of people gather every August for one hour of pure fun:

  • Trucks bring tons of ripe tomatoes

  • A signal is given… and the fight begins

  • Everyone throws tomatoes at each other

  • The streets become rivers of red

Before throwing, people usually squash the tomatoes to avoid hurting others — even in chaos, there is respect.

Cultural Meaning

At first glance, it looks like just fun — but it represents something deeper:

  • 🎉 Freedom and joy

  • 🤝 Equality — everyone is the same during the festival

  • 😂 Letting go of stress and worries

For that one hour, there are:

  • no social differences

  • no formalities

  • just shared happiness
