Romanian Customs & Etiquette: A Tourist's Guide
Romanians are warm and hospitable. Tourists who follow these simple rules will be welcomed like family.
1. Greetings & Removing Shoes
Firm handshake, eye contact. Say "Bună ziua" (good day).
Remove shoes when entering a home (slippers offered).
Never wear outdoor shoes inside (non-negotiable).

2. Hospitality & Țuică (Plum Brandy)
Guests are treated like royalty. Never refuse food or drink politely.
Țuică is offered upon arrival (say "Noroc!" – cheers).
Refusing is fine if you say "Nu beau alcool" (I don't drink).

3. Punctuality & Public Behavior
Business: exactly on time. Home dinner: 5-10 min late. Parties: 15-30 min late.
Never arrive early to a home invitation.
Orderly queues, give seat to elderly, no loud talking on transport.

4. Church Etiquette & Tipping
Women cover hair (scarf), men remove hats. No shorts or sleeveless.
No talking inside. Light a candle, stand during service.
Tipping: 10-15% in restaurants, round up for taxis (cash preferred).
