Special Occasions in Brazillian Communities
Brazilians love to celebrate and we do it with joy, music, food, and lots of people!
Birthdays
Always a big party! Even for adults.
- The table is full of bolo de aniversário (birthday cake), brigadeiros, coxinhas, and salgadinhos (savoury snacks).
- Everyone sings “Parabéns pra Você” (Happy Birthday song) loudly, and the birthday person makes a wish while cutting the first slice.
Weddings
weddings are huge celebrations with religious ceremony followed by a lively party that goes until morning. There’s lots of dancing (samba, forró, and pagode), a massive buffet, and the famous bem-casados sweets given to guests.
Religious & Family Milestones
Baptisms and First Communions are celebrated with big family lunches and godparents playing an important role.
Christmas (Natal): We have a midnight supper on the 24th with turkey, ham, farofa, and panetone. Many families go to Mass at midnight (Missa do Galo).
New Year’s Eve (Réveillon): Very special in Brazil. Many wear white clothes for peace and jump 7 waves at the beach (especially in Rio and coastal areas) while making wishes.
Festa Junina (June Festivals): We dress in country-style clothes, dance quadrilha, eat corn-based foods (canjica, pamonha), and light bonfires.
Graduations, promotions, or new babies are celebrated with big barbecues (churrasco) and the whole family + neighbours invited.
No matter the occasion, the philosophy is the same.
“A casa está aberta, vem todo mundo!” (The house is open, everyone come!)
Food, music, and laughter are always at the centre.
