Tanjore Painting (Thanjavur Painting)
IndiaTamilMumbai (formerly Bombay)
One of the most iconic traditional art forms from the Tamil Indian community is Tanjore Painting (also called Thanjavur Painting), originating from Thanjavur (Tanjore) in Tamil Nadu.
Significance
Tanjore paintings are classical devotional art forms that flourished during the 16th–18th centuries under the Nayaka and Maratha rulers. They are known for their:
- Use of gold foil and semi-precious stones
- Bright, vivid colors
- Religious themes (mainly Hindu gods and goddesses like Krishna, Vishnu, Shiva, and Lakshmi)
These paintings are not just decorative — they are considered sacred and are often kept in homes and temples for worship and to bring prosperity and divine blessings. They represent the rich cultural, artistic, and spiritual heritage of Tamil Nadu and are highly valued as family heirlooms passed down through generations.
