Traditional Wedding Customs in Peru
Peruvian weddings are a beautiful blend of Catholic traditions, indigenous Andean customs, and regional diversity. Most couples have both a civil ceremony (legal) and a religious ceremony (often Catholic). Weddings are lively, family-centered, and full of symbolism.
1. Pre-Wedding Customs

Pedida de Mano (Asking for the Bride’s Hand): The groom’s family formally visits the bride’s family with gifts (flowers, wine, or a basket of fruits). Elders discuss the union.
Cortejo: A period of formal courtship where the groom proves his commitment.
In Andean communities, families may negotiate dowry or exchange symbolic gifts.
2. The Ceremony

Arras (13 Coins): The groom gives the bride 13 gold or silver coins, symbolizing Jesus and the 12 apostles. It represents his promise to provide for her.
El Lazo (The Lasso): A rosary or decorative cord is placed around the couple’s shoulders in a figure-eight shape, symbolizing eternal unity.
Exchange of Rings and Vows: Usually in a Catholic church with godparents (padrinos) playing important roles.
Veil and Crown: The bride often wears a white dress with a veil; in indigenous weddings, traditional embroidered dresses and hats are common.
3. Post-Ceremony Traditions

Secuestro de la Novia (Playful Kidnapping): In some regions, the groom’s friends “kidnap” the bride and demand a ransom (drinks or money) from the groom — all in good fun.
First Dance: Often starts with a waltz, followed by salsa, cumbia, or huayno.
Cake Cutting & Champagne: The cake is usually multi-tiered. The couple may also smash a small doll (representing fertility).
4. Food & Celebration

Traditional dishes: Ceviche, aji de gallina, roasted guinea pig (cuy), or Andean potatoes.
Chicha de jora or pisco sour for toasts.
Live music with huayno, marinera, or salsa bands.
5. Regional Variations

Andean (Quechua/Aymara): Couples wear traditional embroidered clothing; rituals involve coca leaves and offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth).
Coastal: More modern with strong Spanish influence.
Amazonian: Incorporates feathers, seeds, and indigenous rituals.
Peruvian weddings emphasize family unity, faith, prosperity, and joyful celebration — often lasting all night!
